Community Singing
Building connection, joy, and wellbeing through accessible group singing experiences.
I facilitate two vibrant community choirs that welcome anyone who wishes to experience the joy of singing together. There are no auditions, no experience required, and no sheet music. These groups use accessible ear-learning techniques, teaching songs through gentle repetition and building harmony organically.
Whether you think you can sing or not, there is a place for your voice. The Bellingen Singers, founded in 2021, has grown from 9 singers to over 150 members. Meeting regularly on Gumbaynggirr land, the choir embraces a diverse repertoire celebrating local and global musical traditions, fostering wellbeing and occasionally lending its collective voice to initiatives promoting peace and social justice.
Harmonia Singing Circle in Coffs Harbour, founded in 2024, has rapidly grown to over 80 members. The circle provides a welcoming space where participants discover how readily their voice can blend with others in harmony through simple song loops taught by ear.
Both groups demonstrate the documented benefits of community singing: stress reduction, improved mental health, enhanced memory and concentration, and non-verbal emotional expression.
At the community level, these groups build trust through shared vulnerability, create intergenerational connection, and strengthen social support networks. Members consistently report reduced isolation, enhanced sense of belonging, and the joy of being part of something larger than themselves.
These sustained singing practices also form the foundation for more complex collaborative arts projects, with choir members often becoming collaborators in site-specific community works.
